WXY is the architectural design lead for the renovation and reconstruction of six suburban train stations being constructed as part of the $2.6-billion design/build contract for the expansion of LIRR’s Main Line corridor. The project commonly referred to as 3rd Track was initiated by MTA/LIRR in 2017. The stations are located in Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place and Westbury.Completion is scheduled for mid 2022.
The project purpose is to reposition the heavily traversed Main Line corridor, a 9.8 mile long stretch of track running from the Floral Park station to the Hicksville station by adding at Third Track to reducing delays and improving reliability for the over 100,000 daily commuters.
The addition of the express track required total reconstruction of the existing commuter rail stations. WXY was lead for all of all vertical and horizontal elements relating to the stations and station access. The station layouts are also carefully configured to anticipate future transit-oriented development.
All of WXY’s documents were developed in REVIT and shared with the rest of the design/build team using MicroStation ProjectWise. All meetings were conducted using both in-person participation and video conferencing, Multiple rounds of QC/QA and all shop drawing review are being performed collaboratively prior to each submission using Bluebeam cloud sessions.
