A bridge at this location was studied on a number of occasions by the Battery Park City Authority to replace the Rector Street Bridge. The need for the crossing is specific to the heavy traffic on West Street, its vicinity of the Battery Tunnel exit, and the residential and educational land uses on each side of the bridge. The landings are oriented to minimize impacts to the community playground and gardens on the northwest corner of West Thames Street and West Street. The bridge is designed to maximize daylight and views, reduce maintenance, and offer a safe and enjoyable crossing both in the daytime and during evening hours.
